Sabela Summer School — “Dansa madansani”
Africa is the world of expression, colours, adventures, music, warmth, and creative tools. Scholars would argue that it is the birthplace of music and dance. We profess that Africa IS the cradle of dance. Sabela Summer School is an educational initiative devised by Butshilo Nleya that focuses on equipping young people between 15-24 years old with creative thinking skills, performing arts skills, and business ethics. The first pilot ran in 2009 during the Ibumba International Festival and featured 18 young people who took part and covered Drama, Music, Dance and Arts business management short courses. The vision of the Sabela Summer School is to set up an independent Bulawayo based Institute of performing arts that will bridge the gap between secondary education and arts tertiary education and the arts industry. The institution aims to churn out a different artiste for Bulawayo, Zimbabwe and the world at large who is globally aware, business literate, creative, open minded, technological, and original.
Eligibility
Young people have to be 15–24 years old. Current target is O level candidates and A level students of varying dance capabilities, experience and styles and select young/amateur artistes from different companies in Bulawayo.
Total cast number is 16. This will be split between students and semi-professional performers. They will be drawn from different schools, groups and general public. A scouting team will select specific artists from the groups and audition the schools together with anyone who will see the adverts and come for the audition.
Recruitment
This year’s recruitment entails the proven methods and some specific techniques. With the total number being 16, we are opening up the school to amateur dancers and out of school youths or students in their final year of secondary or high school with a passion for dance that would have been recommended by the school.
